EXAMINER®

Applications

Mining & Exploration

Portable x-ray fluorescence is increasingly being used in mining acitivities where it definitely has the potential to cut routine analysis on sediments, soils, tailings and rocks. At all levels of exploitation to concentration to trading, the EXAMINER® assures full control of qualitative and quantitative aspects, to determine the ore grade, or to evaluate the economic feasibility of your operations and enrichment processes. Concentrations of metals or even complexer ores such as Cassiterite - Tantalite - Wolframite - Ferberite can be determined rapidly and in situ.

Metals & Alloys

More than with other application fields, (ED-) XRF is the analytical tool by excellence for analysis and sorting of industrial alloys and metals, but also for metal surface coatings. With the light-weight EXAMINER® analyzer, a large database of alloys and single metallic elements is provided for rapid analysis or screening. Test reports are immediately available for further consulting or communication.

Alloy grade identification  The analyzer is capable of providing alloy chemistry and grade identification withinin seconds: AISI 431, CP-Ti, DUP2205, SS316, SS304, Invar36 (High Nickel), Hastelloy C276...  PMI  Positive Material Identification as a part of safety management in steel plants, petrochemical plants but also applied to third-party testing services, maintenance...

Consumer goods

Exposure to hazardous substances in consumer goods (e.g. toys) is especially dangerous for young children and needs to be assessed in a QC/QA policy. Hazardous materials in the product material, pigment or paint may be including: lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, chrome, nickel... Every day househould items may also contain flame retardants. If results are positive in compliance with local regulations on hazardous substances, redrawal of the batch of toys or goods is the only solution.

Paint Analysis

Safety of workers is increasingly being regulated by governmental bodies. Lead is a toxic substance that, with persistent exposures, can result in a build-up in the human body up to dangerous levels. With the EXAMINER® it is easy to assess lead concentrations in all kinds of commercially available or industrial paints. However, it can be difficult to differentiate the base material from the paint when analyzed directly resulting possibly in false positive readings.

As for paints used in valuable objects (such as paintings), it has been demonstrated that many paints contain metallic pigments such as cadmium or titanium, or other typcial compounds that can be used to identify a type of paint that an artist or tribe was known to use.

Archaeometry

Museum curators, art historians, and archeologists must be constantly alert to forgeries. XRF is a great tool for them since it can identify the specific elemental composition of rare and valuable items without damaging them.

X -ray fluorescence has been called 'the curator's dream instrument' because measurements are non-destructive and the whole object (surface) can be analyzed, rather than a sample removed from one. The technique involves aiming an X-ray beam at the surface of an object. This means the artefact does not have to be touched in order to determine the legacy of it. The technology used in EXAMINER® is accurate and fast, and most importantly portable, so you can take it straight in front of your artefact, wherever it is located.

Academic research

Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF), as used by the EXAMINER®, is probably one of the simplest, most accurate and most economic analytical methods for the determination of the chemical composition of many types of materials. It is non-destructive and reliable, requires no or little sample preparation and is suitable for solid, liquid and powders. The appropriate Process® software is at its best when run on a desktop computer, allowing you to take full adavantage of its capabilities.

Soil remediation

Portable XRF offers a rapid and relatively inexpensive approach to site mapping, in order to identify typical pollutants such as heavy metals. Similar to mining activities, a large number of measurements of the contaminated site can be performed quickly without waiting for lab results. Limits of hot spots can be tracked easily and remediation can already be prepared while measurements are in full progress. All this is possible when the EXAMINER® is used as handheld or as a benchtop unit. Previously unidentified elements can be determined thanks to the incorporated Auto-element finder.
