Sodium in LPG
The UPA® on-line analyzer system for monitoring sodium levels in LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) is designed specifically for controlling the caustic wash process of the LPG treatment plant. The system consists of a process analyzer and a sample preconditioning unit and can be used withing a process control strategy in refineries.
The explosion proof version of our multiparameter UPA® Series is ideally suited for use in hazardous areas and factory tested. The process analyzer is equipped with an integrated protective stainless steel enclosure controlled by an external purge and pressurization unit, as well as all necessary connections. The whole system, including separate preconditioning unit, is Zone 2 certified under the EU ATEX Directive 94/9/EC for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (Zone 1 also possible).
The performance and life of combustion engines optimized for LPG can severely deteriorate through elevated sodium levels in the engine gas. These small yet significant levels originate from the sweetening process, essential for meeting product sulfur specifications, and carryover of sodium from the caustic wash tower of the LPG treatment plant. Determining these levels downstream helps refineries to adjust process conditions and decrease the risk of off-spec batches. Whereas conventional techniques such as ICP or AAS can provide extremely high resolution and level of detection, these are of limited use in modern-day production processes where fast process feedback is required. AppliTek’s research has lead to the development of a proprietary wet-chemical technique especially developed for LPG manufacturers, allowing to finetune the process to yield a near as perfect product quality.
