Salts in Crude Oil

The UPA® on-line analyzer system for determination of salts in crude oil allows efficient control over the salt removal process in desalter units. The UPA® system complements the common practice of interface level measurements, yet as a stand-alone system designed specifically for use in refineries.

The necessity to withstand the harsh environment of desalting systems require that any analyzer system and components used for monitoring the desalter environment must be capable of continuous operation for a period of time. The explosion proof version of our multiparameter UPA® Series is ideally suited for monitoring chloride levels and factory tested to fully meet ATEX or NEC 500 directives. The process analyzer is equipped with an integrated protective stainless steel enclosure controlled by an external purge and pressurization unit, as well as all necessary connections.

The analyzer’s sampling system is engineered for connection to the following sample take-off points:

  • Desalter feed line
  • Desalter outlet
  • Crude oil terminal (jetty)


Crude oil desalters carry the important task to remove inorganic salts, water and sediment from the oil feedstock. Without these, chlorides generated would cause severe corrosion of pipe walls, heat exchanger tubes and shell, and other carbon steel components in which they come in contact during processing. Besides corrosion, expensive catalysts can be damaged due to the presence of chlorides. Salts are typically removed by creating an oil-water emulsion inside the desalter that is controlled by interface level measurements. Level measurements in desalters present a challenging application and are not always correct, resulting in desalters operating at low interface levels and compromised efficiency. The effectiveness of the salt removal process depends on controlling the emulsion layer in the desalter and/or analyzing on-line the salt levels.
